Why preparation matters

Floors and tiles need a sound, suitably level base. Moisture, movement and uneven surfaces can all cause problems later, so it’s worth checking them before choosing the final material. Old floor coverings in older properties may also need care when removed. If asbestos is suspected, it should be checked before being disturbed .

Important details before you start

Flooring and carpentry meet at the details people use every day: thresholds, skirting, architraves and internal doors. New floor build-up can alter door clearances and appliance access. Discuss the intended floor product and relevant trim or door work together, with the actual carpentry tasks listed in the scope. Bespoke furniture, specialist joinery and restoration are not assumed simply because general carpentry is part of the service range.

A clear conversation before an agreed scope

Identify the rooms, intended use and the floor product you are considering. Assess levels, moisture and the existing substrate before confirming the preparation required. Discuss door clearances, skirting, thresholds and any other internal carpentry at the same time. Coordinate heating-system and manufacturer instructions where relevant, then agree removal, installation and protection. The scope should explain when the area can be used and how it connects with adjoining floors and the final decorating work.

Your questions, answered

Why inspect the subfloor first?

Movement, moisture and unevenness can affect the new covering. Establish what preparation is necessary before deciding that a particular finish can be installed over the existing floor.

Can new tiles go over old tiles?

Sometimes, but the existing bond, surface condition and extra height must be suitable. Inspect the substrate and confirm the complete product system rather than treating this as a universal shortcut.

Can you discuss wood and laminate flooring?

Yes, explain the room use and the product you are considering. Moisture, expansion allowances, transitions and manufacturer requirements need to be included in the installation plan.

What carpentry can be included?

Discuss relevant internal door, skirting, architrave and finishing requirements. Confirm each task in the quotation; specialist bespoke joinery is not automatically included.

What about underfloor heating?

Check that the chosen floor product and installation method are suitable for the actual heating system. Temperature limits and commissioning instructions should come from the relevant manufacturers.

When should decorating happen?

Agree the sequence around dusty preparation, trim installation and the finished floor. Protective measures and any final making-good should be described in the scope.
